Connections are one of my points to bring to council. Think about safety and usability.

We need to address this situation BEFORE there is a fatality!
Do you feel safe riding or walking along the side of a road?
How about trying to cross Port Road Bridge?
This bridge was built in 1956, 63 years ago.
How many Near Misses have happened?
How many accidents have happened?
Most other bridges in town have footpaths attached, either once side or both.
For some reason... this doesn't have one!
With a huge amount of people working out towards the Port, why hasn't this happened sooner.
NZTA says that if you are to walk on a road, walk towards the traffic, but that would also mean crossing the road, which is tricky enough having to cross 2 sets of double lanes, and merging ones at that. (We all know how good some are at merging)
I have heard that there is some plans to put a bridge across here when the shared path goes in... but how far away is that? A couple of years away at the earliest, if it doesn't get pushed back.
I currently drive across this bridge daily and see the danger many face attempting to cross.
What if there happened to be people crossing on both sides? What does the traffic do? Stop? Sure does.
Imagine the traffic jam that would occur if there was a major accident here? This is an road artery, thousands going across every day.
I've spoken to some of those who cross the bridge and they say "I'd ride to work, but it's not safe" and "It's the only way, you just have to cross".
Let's make it safe for the residents who work here! Let's ease congestion by making it safer to walk or bike.
Let's Build a Bridge and get over it!
