Civic center $38 million?
It's a huge number... but what does it mean though?
How many staff will this benefit, who also are awesome people who Live IN this community?!
350 Staff! (you likely know someone whom this will help.)
In 38 years the Civic Center will essentially be paid off with the savings of the rent they currently spend. $1 million a year rent!
(Where do you think that rent comes from?)
They currently have staff spread out and have to walk almost half kilometer to WDC and from Walton Plaza.
Parts of the council building are not up to earthquake code and trying to fix an older building would likely be a waste of money to even TRY to strengthen it.
The rest of Forum North has issues with the fact the roof is flat in profile and occasionally leaks, requiring ongoing maintenance.
The library build, which was around $8 million for the building... then ended up costing $15 million in the end after setting it up fully.
The new civic centre is getting everyone in the same efficient building, which makes it easier to get issues sorted.
The costing has been provided to include the whole cost, not to just build.
This does make the cost look larger, but it also lets us know the true cost.
The current WDC building was build in the early 1980s. Almost 40 years ago, when the technology we have today was not around.
(Think about this: It was only 20 years ago cellphones were beginning to be commonplace.)
This should bring make a much more sustainable and efficient building.
